Finally, after many years of searching, many near misses on eBay and many hunts in antique or junk shops to no avail, I have found a pair of Avery sweet shop scales. Luckily they weren't fifty squillion miles away from home (nobody will post these as they weigh an absolute ton) and didn't cost the earth...infact they were quite a bargain and cheaper than my normal boring everyday scales...Yay!
Aren't they just fab? I spent Sunday afternoon dismantling them and cleaning 56 years of sweetie shop grime from them..and how do I know that it's 56 years? As the date of May 8th 1955 is stamped inside.
Now I've just got to fathom out how to get the needle back to zero. Maths was never my strong point!
Don't you just LoVe it when you can tick something off the wish list!
ps. Thankyou so much for your last lovely messages, it was so nice that I hadn't been forgotten and that you don't mind putting up with my waffly, erratic posts! x
How lovely and I am absolutely green. I too have been looking for this sort of scale to go along with all the other vintage finds I have found. Well found that girl. Love the erratic posts and the lovely piccies that come along too. Your dresser and the crocks are fab

Lovely scales. There must be quite a few around as there used to be so many independent sweet shops or were they discarded in favour of the more modern scales as is so often the case. It looks fantastic on your dresser.
ReplyDeleteJune
They are fabbo - reminds me of the sweet shop I used to visit every Saturday as a child - can I have some sherbert pips please :)
ReplyDeleteOh they are FAB!..and you've done a great job cleaning them because they look like new! Love your dresser and all your Cornishware. :0)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I've got a similar set that I rescued from my mums potters shed. They're not as mint as yours as were used for weighing glazes. Love your bog too :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant find, they look fab! And I just love your dresser and everything on it too! :)
ReplyDeleteAlways glad when I see your wee thingy pop up to say you've posted. You even write sad stuff in a want to read more way if that doesn't sound too odd. Love your new look and your scales - woo hoo. I know what you mean about mental lists. SOmetimes daft people ask me at the car boot what I'm looking for and I just look and them and think dur. There's years of lists and wants stored in there to be ticked off of course, that's half the fun of the looking and coming home with yet more toot.
ReplyDeleteTake care Sairer and have fun with your scales.

Thanks for the words on the hens. They're fab and the boys (especially Archie,) do love them. The cats can't take their eyes of them but the hens don't bat an eyelid now.

DeleteHello
ReplyDeleteI found your blog while researching Avery Scales
If anyone is interested, I have an identical set of Avery scales which I am happy to sell.
If you would like to make me an offer, please email me mbishop@blueyonder.co.uk.
We are in Melksham, Wiltshire.

Hi..lovely scales..I have just got identical set but they are 2 1/2 oz out..as yours are on pic have you managed to work out how to adjust?
ReplyDeleteHello, no sorry, I never found out how to adjust them. I've given up to be honest, they've since become a fruit holder!
DeleteIf you dismantle cradle and unscrew ceramic disc..underneath is a section with lead weights..we kept taking them out and putting scoop with all screws..ceramic top and discs..on top until the needle steadily stayed at zero...after gently weighing etc we put it all back together...balanced the feet until spirit level bubble was centred. Out scales are now at zero and are almost perfect... They weigh true.
DeleteAlso if you dismantle underneath there is a vessel filled with linseed oil which acts as a damper..it had dried out and left a sticky rim..so scrubbed it out and re-filled with teak oil..(that's all we had to hand)... You can adjust the needle slightly with the face unscrewed...
But from a clunky....unbalanced set of scales we now have a lovely smooth balanced set. 😀
One other thing to mention when we got these the scoop and scale were side by side but we unscrewed and turned it round so the scoop was in front like yours.

How did you get those two silver "bolts" with the two little holes undone? Mine seem frozen solid...
DeleteAlso, why not post some photos up somewhere...you'd be helping a LOT of people get their scales working again...
DeleteWe have worked out how to zero the scales!
ReplyDeleteOooooh well done!!! I get asked all the time when people find a picture of my scales... Ok you'll have to share the secret now 😉 x
